Finnish Literacy Work on Display in Stockholm
The Bonniers Family Foundation, member of EURead, is co-hosting the event in collaboration with the Swedish Arts Council. During the conference, leading actors from all over Europe – from national reading promotion organisations to publishers, authorities and cultural institutions – will gather to discuss one of the most crucial issues of our time: the future of reading.
“It is a great honour to welcome EURead to Stockholm. The theme for this year is The Right to Read. Reading is not just a skill, but a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for both education and democracy, something we need to strengthen more than ever”, says Lovisa Fhager Logothetis, Secretary General of Bonniers Family Foundation.
During the days in Stockholm, the focus will be on the right to read as a universal human right, the strategies to ensure equal access to books, libraries and reading promotion programmes, as well as the sharing of successful initiatives and research on reading and literacy.
In addition to attending the EURead AGM, the Executive Director of the Finnish Reading Center, Emmi Jäkkö, will also gain a broader understanding of literacy initiatives in Sweden. During a meeting with experts from the Swedish Arts Council (Kulturrådet), recent trends in literacy in Sweden and Finland were reviewed. Emmi Jäkkö has also met with the Secretary General of the Swedish Library Association, attended the Rinkeby Book Festival, and participated in the ceremony for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
About EURead
Founded in 2000, EURead is a European network of 39 organisations from 28 countries, working to strengthen reading and reading comprehension across Europe. Its members include non-profit organisations, publishers, booksellers, libraries, government agencies and ministries. The network serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and cooperation on reading promotion in an era characterised by digitisation, changing media habits and increasing gaps in education.
EURead publishes strategic documents; the organisation is involved in initiatives such as Europe Reads and European Authors Day, and participates in major international forums including the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and the Frankfurt Book Fair. The network also brings together researchers and practitioners through its Researchers’ Network and the Global Network for Early Years Bookgifting, which connects organisations across six continents.
