Campaigns and Programs

The Finnish Reading Center’s project activities are based on research, broad target groups, accessibility and concrete approaches. Many of Finnish Reading Center’s projects have been running for many years, which has enabled long-term development and putting the results into practice. Our aim is to create large-scale, lasting change with a broad impact, enabling a reading lifestyle for everyone.

Read Aloud

Read Aloud Initiative promotes early reading with intriguing and accessible material for professionals working with 0-8-year-old children and families.

Read Aloud consists of a webpage serving professionals working with children and families, a nationwide book gifting program, and a model for teachers to enhance and maintain children’s enthusiasm for books and reading in pre-school and the first two years of primary school.

Words matter

Words Matter encourages vocational school students to read. Sanat haltuun (‘Words matter!’) campaign is funded by UPM and implemented by the Finnish Reading Centre. The aim of the campaign is to find hands-on solutions to support literacy among vocational students. The methods vary from workshops to author visits.

Prata Bok

In the Finnish Reading Center’s project Prata Bok (“Book Talk”), school groups interview current authors and illustrators at the Helsinki Book Fair. Prata bok offers Swedish-speaking pupils a unique opportunity to meet with authors. The school groups get practice in reading a book in depth, organising a literature discussion and performing on a stage.

Reading Week

Reading Week is an annual nationwide literacy theme week organised by the Finnish Reading Center. Reading Week highlights the importance of reading and literacy on a broad spectrum in society and for the individual.

On Reading Week we encourage everyone to pick up a book! We also publish current information about reading yearly, such as the 10 Facts About Reading information packages.

Other Projects

A Hundred Libraries – Thousands of encounters

The Ministry of Education and Culture has allocated €100 000 to the Finnish Reading Center to organise author visits to public libraries. The funds will be used to organise around 100 author visits during the spring and autumn of 2025.

The aim of the Multilingual Literacy Project was to find out what is needed to maintain and strengthen one’s mother tongue and literacy, from the perspective of kindergartens, libraries and multicultural families and communities.

Kirja Eläväksi – The Book Comes Alive

Kirja Eläväksi (“The Book Comes Alive”) Project took authors to schools all over Finland. With virtual and local visits, authors inspired children and young people to read and write.
